Two hours from Medellín there is a 200-metre granite monolith with a staircase stitched into its crack, a lake with a drowned town at the bottom, and the most colourful small town in Colombia. Guatapé is the country’s favourite day trip — and one of the most photogenic places in South America. This 2026 guide maps a real one-day visit, with everything you need: prices, the stairs, the sunken village of Viejo Peñol and the streets painted like a candy box.

Watch the real visit first

This guide is mapped from the trip of Michelle Thielen, a Venezuelan travel creator who filmed a full day in Guatapé — from the base of the rock at 8:00 am to the umbrella street at golden hour:

What her day teaches you (mapped)

  • Be at the rock by 8:00 am. She started the climb right at opening — by 10 am the staircase becomes a slow single-file queue in the sun.
  • The climb is easier than it looks. ~740 steps, most people do it in 20–30 minutes with photo stops.
  • Do rock first, town second. The rock has zero shade at midday; the town is where you want to be in the afternoon light.
  • Don’t skip the lake viewpoints on the road between the rock and town — some of the best photos of the day cost nothing.

Climbing La Piedra del Peñol

The monolith rises 200 metres above the reservoir, and the famous zig-zag staircase is wedged into a natural crack in the rock face.

And this is the reward at the top — a maze of teal water and green peninsulas stretching to the horizon:

The town at the bottom of the lake

That “lake” is not natural. Between 1970 and 1979 a hydroelectric dam flooded the valley — and with it the original town of El Viejo Peñol. The old church cross still marks the spot where the town sank, and boat tours from Guatapé’s malecón take you across the drowned streets while guides tell the story. It is one of the most surreal 40 minutes you can spend in Colombia.

Guatapé town: zócalos and the umbrella street

Guatapé calls itself the Pueblo de Zócalos — the lower half of nearly every house is decorated with hand-painted relief panels showing village life, llamas, fishing boats and family crests. Head for the Calle del Recuerdo, the sloping lane roofed with coloured umbrellas, and the Plazoleta de los Zócalos.

Getting there from Medellín (2026)

  1. Bus: from Terminal del Norte (booth 14), COP 25,000, ~2 hours (3 on weekends). Buy the return ticket as soon as you arrive — weekend buses sell out.
  2. Day tour: hotel pickup + rock + boat + lunch, the zero-logistics option.
  3. Between rock and town: local bus (~15 min) or moto-taxi ~COP 9,000.

Stay the night (the move most people miss)

Most visitors day-trip and leave at 4 pm with the crowds. Stay one night and you get the umbrella street to yourself at dusk, lakeside dinner, and glamping domes with the rock framed in your window — Michelle came back for exactly that:

FAQ

How many steps does Piedra del Peñol have?
About 740 going up (the descent uses a separate stairway). Most people climb it in 20–30 minutes.

How much does Guatapé cost as a day trip?
Roughly US$20–25 doing it independently: COP 25,000 bus each way, COP 25,000 rock entrance, plus food. Organised tours cost more but include the boat and lunch.

Is Guatapé worth staying overnight?
Yes — the town empties after 4 pm and the best light on the zócalos is early morning and dusk. Glamping with a view of the rock is the signature stay.

Can you swim in Guatapé lake?
In designated areas and from boat stops — it’s a reservoir, so follow local guidance.
