Hidden Places in Italy Travel Guide: Friuli’s Lakes, Villages and Mountains
SHARE

This hidden places in Italy travel guide takes you to Friuli Venezia Giulia, where medieval walls, emerald lakes, mountain waterfalls and food traditions offer a quieter, more varied alternative to Italy’s headline sights. Following Michelle Thielen’s route through northern Friuli, this guide explains how to reach the region, when to go, which stops deserve your time, what key experiences cost in 2026 and how to recreate the journey independently. It is an ideal short road trip for travelers who want Italy beyond the standard Rome–Florence–Venice circuit.

What Michelle Thielen’s journey shows

  • She begins around Lago dei Tre Comuni and the wider lake-and-mountain landscape of inland Friuli.
  • She visits the Cornino Lake Reserve, known for its clear green water, lookout points and griffon-vulture conservation project.
  • In San Daniele del Friuli, she explores the food culture behind Prosciutto di San Daniele DOP.
  • She walks through walled Venzone and visits the crypt containing the town’s naturally preserved mummies.
  • Her route continues into the mountains for Fontanone di Goriuda waterfall and ends beside Lago del Predil near the Slovenian border.

Watch Michelle Thielen’s original journey first, then use the practical details below to plan your own version.

How to get to Friuli’s hidden places

Udine is the most practical city base for the first half of this itinerary, while Tarvisio works well for the mountain portion. From elsewhere in Italy, arrive by train into Udine, then rent a car. Public transport can reach selected places, but it is not efficient for combining Cornino, San Daniele, Venzone, Goriuda and Lake Predil in one short trip.

For the waterfall, the official regional tourism board notes that Fontanone di Goriuda is served by bus line 191 from Chiusaforte or Sella Nevea; however, the nearest useful railway stations are still more than 20 kilometres from Pian della Sega. A car gives you the flexibility to stop safely for views and to adjust to mountain weather.

Plan this as a circular route rather than a list of isolated day trips: Udine or San Daniele for the first night, Venzone or Gemona for the second, then Tarvisio or the Lake Predil area for the final night. For a deeper cultural detour before heading north, see our Friuli, Italy guide to Friulian language and culture.

Best time to visit

Late spring through early autumn is the easiest period for this route. May, June, September and early October are particularly rewarding for comfortable walks, clearer driving conditions and quieter villages. Summer is best if swimming is part of your Lake Predil plan: the regional tourism board describes the lake as safe for swimming in summer, although its water remains cold even on warm days.

Autumn is excellent for food-focused travelers, especially in San Daniele, while winter gives Lake Predil a much more silent, alpine character; the lake can freeze during the long winter season. Do not treat this as a summer-only landscape, but check road conditions and daylight hours carefully if traveling between November and March.

What it costs in 2026

Friuli rewards travelers who combine free natural stops with one or two bookable local experiences. The prices below were available from official local or regional sources when checked in October 2026. Accommodation, fuel, meals and car hire vary significantly by date, so compare them before booking rather than relying on a fixed daily-budget figure.

Experience 2026 price What to know
Venzone Mummies crypt €1.50 full admission The municipal listing gives summer hours of 09:00–19:00 and winter hours of 09:00–17:00; access involves stairs into the crypt.
Authentic Prosciutto Experience, San Daniele €43 Official regional listings showed selected dates from 12 October to 23 December 2026; advance booking is essential.
San Daniele factory visit and ham tasting €40 Official regional listings showed selected dates from 12 October to 30 December 2026; confirm the specific producer and language before payment.

Fontanone di Goriuda itself is a very short outdoor walk: the official route is 0.6 kilometres, takes about 15 minutes and gains 50 metres. That makes it an excellent high-impact stop even on a travel day.

Where to stay

Choose accommodation by route, not simply by the most famous town. Stay in San Daniele del Friuli for restaurants, ham tastings and rolling-hill scenery; Venzone or Gemona del Friuli for a central base between Cornino and the mountains; and Tarvisio if Lake Predil, Cave del Predil and the Julian Alps are your priorities.

For a slower trip, look for a small hotel, agriturismo or licensed guesthouse rather than changing accommodation every night. In San Daniele, some ham factories offer guided visits by reservation; Prolongo, for example, lists weekday and Saturday opening hours and says tours must be booked in advance.

Practical tips for driving, walking and visiting respectfully

This is an easy route only if you respect its mountain setting. Download offline maps, keep fuel topped up before heading toward the border, carry a light waterproof layer and wear shoes with grip for the waterfall path. At Fontanone di Goriuda, stay on the marked route: the waterfall’s beauty comes with wet rocks, spray and cold water.

At Cornino, arrive early and bring binoculars if you enjoy wildlife. The reserve covers roughly 500 hectares and has viewpoints, a visitor centre, guided excursions on request and a long-running griffon conservation project. Keep noise low and never approach or feed wildlife.

In Venzone, remember that the mummies are human remains in a cemetery crypt, not a novelty attraction. Dress and behave respectfully. The old town also tells a powerful story of reconstruction after the 1976 earthquake, so leave time to walk beyond the main square. For activities such as a tasting, a guided ham-factory visit or a cave excursion, reserve directly with an official provider. San Daniele’s prosciutto culture is rooted in its local microclimate, where Alpine and Adriatic air meet, so the most meaningful visit is one that includes both the town and a producer.

Day-by-day (how to travel it yourself)

Day 1: Udine to Cornino and San Daniele. Collect your car in Udine, drive to Cornino Lake Reserve for the viewpoints and lakeside walk, then continue to San Daniele del Friuli. Book a ham tasting or producer visit, stay overnight and take an evening walk through town.

Day 2: San Daniele to Venzone and the Goriuda valley. Visit Venzone in the morning, including the cathedral area and mummies crypt. Continue north through the Carnic and Julian mountain landscapes. Stop at Fontanone di Goriuda, then base yourself in Tarvisio or nearby.

Day 3: Lake Predil and the border mountains. Start at Lake Predil for a lakeshore walk, photographs and a relaxed picnic if conditions allow. Add Cave del Predil or Tarvisio according to your interests, then drive back toward Udine or continue into Slovenia only if your rental agreement and documents allow cross-border travel.

Frequently asked questions

Is Friuli a good choice for a first trip to Italy?
Yes, especially if you prefer landscapes, small towns and regional food to a fast-paced checklist of famous monuments. It works best as part of a wider northeast Italy itinerary or as a self-drive trip.

Do I need a car for this hidden places in Italy travel guide?
A car is strongly recommended. Trains can reach Udine, Venzone and Tarvisio, but the lake, waterfall and mountain stops are much harder to connect efficiently by public transport.

Can I swim in Lake Predil?
Yes, the regional tourism board says swimming is safe in summer, but the lake is alpine and the water is cold. Swim only in appropriate conditions and do not assume lifeguard services are present.

How much time do I need for this route?
Three days is the minimum for a satisfying trip. Four or five days is better if you want unhurried walks, a booked food experience, Venzone’s museums and time for changing mountain weather.
